Officially known now as Old Town Museum at Seven Oaks, this stately home was built in 1850 by Col. Middleton Stuart, who led the Hamilton Guards, a Confederate company of soldiers from Bluffton, during the Civil War.

The structure has served as a single family home and as a boarding house. After several years of sitting empty and falling into disrepair, in 2006 it was purchased by Thomas Viljac and Miles Loadholt and completely restored to its original splendor. Careful attention has been paid to every detail.

The front steps are original to the house, constructed of a single block of tabby, a material created from local oyster shells. Flooring throughout the house is either original or reclaimed heart pine planks. Exposed beams in the ceilings are original. Original glass panes in the windows give a shimmery cast to sunbeams.

Rooms have been restored in a manner typical of antebellum homes, with simple wainscoting beneath the white walls. Fireplaces in two main rooms once provided warmth throughout. The kitchen has been refitted with handmade cabinetry, crafted from pine reclaimed from dismantled old houses and shacks around town.

Out back, the view over Huger Cove to the May River is a wonderful site for watching magnificent sunsets.

The house and grounds, with its majestic seven oaks still standing proud, will open soon as a museum that will highlight the unique history, culture and art of Old Town Bluffton. Artifacts, maps, photos and other items of historical interest are being sought to help make the stories complete.
